METHODICAL WAY TO TEACH A CHILD TO READ

Helping a child to read is a fabulous experience in its own, as you would not only be helping the little one complete a major milestone in his or her life, but you would also be paving the gateway for the child to succeed in many aspects when he starts formal schooling. Teaching children to read is not as complicated or time taking a task as many people think it to be.

Read out in front of the child

A child would always tend to emulate what he sees the elders doing. Hence when you read out stories and tales from books of the child’s age, he would automatically develop an instinct to try to read it like you, and that is the first and most important step of finding the answer of how to teach your child to read. While the child would certainly not be able to read, as he would not have any knowledge of the alphabets yet, but the desire to read would get generated and that is as good as winning half the battle.

Ask questions

While you read out, do not miss out on asking questions to the child. By doing this, you would not only be encouraging active interaction of the child with the book, but at the same time the child would also be learning to comprehend the story that is being read out to him. End of the day, by helping the Children Learning Reading, you are basically wanting him to comprehend what he reads, and not just decode the words that he would be reading.

Slowly introduce the letters

Now that your child has developed the instinct of reading and comprehending, you can slowly start introducing him to letters. A good way of doing this is by making the letters available around him naturally. Many people tend to scribe the name of the toddler in big fonts around his bed or in his room. This way, the child would develop a natural inquisitiveness about the letters and would start asking you questions on what does that symbol mean, and then you have all the time to explain to him that what letter it is and how his name or a word is being built out of these letters.

Phonics reading is very important

While you learn about how to teach a toddler to read, it is also important that you give equal importance to phonics reading for kids. This is basically making the child learn to spell the sound of the word and learn about the various rules that English language has. While it is important that phonics reading is also being taught to the child, but this should not be the primary focuses while making the child learn how to read. The first target is to make him aware of the various letters and the basic principle of adding these letters to form different words and then comes the phonics learning part, without which the child’s reading skills would not be complete.
